Debre Birhan Selassie Church Located in the heart of Gondar, again just a few minutes drive from either Fasil Ghebbi or Fasilides Bath is one of Ethiopia most beautiful churches, the famed Debre Birhan Selassie. As one enters the compound one first notices the stone wall surrounding the church grounds, again it is a good idea to walk the wall and take in those 12 amazing rock towers (representing the 12 Apostles). The church itself from the outside is rather unassuming but interesting all the same. It is only when entering that one discovers the WOW factor is raised by quite a few bars. The paintings cover literally every square centimetre of the wall and roof. From the winged Cherubs on the ceiling to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit paintings above the altar one is in for a right royal treat. The Debre Birhan Selassie Church is one of those places in life when you enter your chin literally hits the ground with awe followed by a few minutes of silence as you try to take in what you are looking at. The church itself has a rather interesting history with one of the best being that a swarm of bees had kept an invading army of Sudanese Dervishes for burning the church to the ground, got to love those bees.
