Lacan does not approach diagnosis via symptoms bur rather via a consideration of the predominant structure underlying the subject's existential stance. In this respect, Lacanian psychoanalysis differs dramatically from the checkbox diagnosis-by-symptoms approach. The three structures that Lacan foregrounds (neurosis, psychosis and perversion) are each based on a primary mode of defense (repression, foreclosure and disavowal, respectively). These modes of defense are not, as it were, 'add ons' to the subject. Rather, the subject emerges as such via the prominence of one or other mode of defense.
