Girmit Remembrance Day.

"Girmit" is a corruption of the word "agreement". It was an agreement that indentured labourers had to sign before they could become indentured (a form of slavery) in the service of the British Empire around the world. In the context of Fiji, the first indentured labourers arrived from India on 14th May 1879 onboard a boat called the "Leonidas". Over 60,000 labourers arrived between 1879 and 1916 when the system of indentured labour was abolished. Those early labourers endured enormous hardship usually at the hands of overseers from Australia and New Zealand who were merciless and sadistic in the punishment they handed out. Every 14th May the people of Fiji celebrate Girmit Remembrance Day to acknowledge those early indentured labourers.
