Estonian president meets Bush

(26 Jun 2007) 1. Wide side shot of US President George W. Bush and Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, in Oval Office 2. Cutaway of press 3. SOUNDBITE: (English) George W. Bush, US President : "Today, once again, we saw the brutality that extremists can inflict upon societies when a suicider (sic) killed innocent people who were working toward reconciliation. All the more reason, Mr. President, for us to remain firm and strong as we stand for this young democracy - these young democracies. The people of Estonia paid a high price. You lost - I know you lost two soldiers in Afghanistan recently, and our thoughts and prayers go to the families and the people of Estonia. We thank you for your sacrifice and just want you to know that we're committed to working hard to make sure that we succeed - and we succeed for the sake of peace for generations to come." 4. Cutaway of Ilves listening to Bush 5. SOUNDBITE: (English) George W. Bush, US President : "Estonia recently went through a wave of cyber attacks. And this President, one, understands the issue well; two, has got some ideas, including a NATO centre of excellence in Estonia to deal with this issue. And I really want to thank you for your leadership, and thank you for your clear understanding of the dangers that that imposes not only on your country, but mine and others, as well." 6. Cutaway of Vice President Dick Cheney and other advisers in Oval Office 7. SOUNDBITE: (English) Toomas Hendrik Ilves, Estonian President : "I'm grateful for President Bush's position which I did push him hard on, on the visa issue. It is something of concern in Estonia, but I think all the other new members of NATO, the ones who are - who have been very good allies in Iraq and in Afghanistan, and our people don't always understand why it is that those countries that have been the strongest supporters of the United States find it often the most difficult to come for a vacation." 8. Wide side shot of Bush and Ilves shaking hands as photo op comes to a close STORYLINE: President George W. Bush, acknowledging he could stand to "learn a lot" about cyber-security, expressed concern on Monday over the high-tech hacking that crippled computer systems in Estonia. Bush praised Estonia's president, Toomas Hendrik Ilves, for sharing information on how to deal with such security breaches. Estonia, a former Soviet republic, claims it has suffered cyber attacks against its government and corporate Web sites at the hands of Russian hackers, as retribution over a bitter dispute with Moscow over the removal of a Red Army statue in downtown Tallinn, the capital of the Baltic nation. The Russian government has denied involvement. Bush stayed away from the touchy matter, instead focusing on the lesson of vulnerability for the United States. "Thank you for your clear understanding of the dangers that imposes not only on your country, but mine and others as well," Bush told Ilves after their meeting at the White House. Bush praised Estonia for contributing troops to the US-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He briefly noted the latest suicide bombing in Baghdad on Monday, which killed at least 12 people, including a US-allied tribal sheik. Bush told Ilves the attack was "all the more reason...to remain firm and strong as we stand for this young democracy." Ilves thanked the United States for standing by his country's quest for independence "even in the darkest of times." Yet again he urged Bush to include Estonia and other countries in a visa waiver programme, which allows citizens of some countries to enter the US with only passports.
