PORCUPINE Ridge Hike in Kananaskis, Alberta (4K)

A perfect early season hike with GREAT views in the front ranges of Kananaskis. This hike is roughly 9.5 kms return trip with an elevation gain of about 700 meters. It has a couple minor hands on sections and is great if you're wanting to learn a basic scramble. To get here drive from Calgary heading west on Hwy #1 to Hwy #40, Start your odometer in front of the Stoney Nakoda Casino entrance and drive 14.5 km. Park at Porcupine Creek just on the highway. Alternative parking can be done at Wasootch parking lot just down the road but it adds on another 1 km or so to the trip. Trail is very obvious for the entire trip with the exception of the spot where the 2 creeks merge. From this point don't continue down either creek but head directly up the middle between them. This is where the climbing begins. Disclaimer - Always scramble within your own abilities. Thoroughly assess the situation and research the route. Just because I may have done this route at this time doesn't mean you can or should. GPS and/or a topo map are a valuable tool to help. Leave a route description behind with exact location should you not arrive home at a predetermined time. Have a way to contact rescue as well if you are in an area of no cell service(SPOT, Garmin, etc.). Also, if hiking in winter make sure you have the necessary skill and knowledge regarding unstable conditions and perform a proper risk assessment prior to engaging in this activity.
