MP2006-31 Campaign 1952

This silent home movie depicts the train trip that President Truman and Margaret Truman took across the country to campaign on behalf of Adlai Stevenson, the Democratic candidate for president in 1952. The dates are approximately September 29 - October 10, 1952. The stops are in North Dakota, including Minot; Montana, including Glasgow, Chester for a drive to Tiber Dam for the groundbreaking ceremony blast, Hungry Horse Dam outside Kalispell; probably Washington state; California, including Redding and Shasta Dam, San Francisco and the Fairmont Tonga Room exterior; Utah, including a speech at Brigham Young University in Provo; Colorado, including Grand Junction; Iowa, including Shenandoah; and beyond. This film belonged to and was possibly taken by William M. Rigdon, President Truman's Assistant Naval Aide, or another member of the Navy. Because the exact origin is unclear, the copyright status is unknown. The Truman Library only has a VHS tape of this material and cannot improve upon its quality. Please see Georgia Southern University's Special Collections for the original film and to verify copyright status. Please credit: William M. Rigdon Collection at Georgia Southern University; Harry S. Truman Library. This film is part of the Motion Picture series at the Truman Library. Please see this link for the National Archives Catalog record: https://catalog.archives.gov/id/595162
