AI Photography Shoot: Creating a Headpiece | Inside Fashion and Beauty Photography w/ Lindsay Adler

Is art created by Artificial Intelligence (AI) a friend or foe? If you have looked at some of the photorealistic art created by AI programs like DALL-E and Midjourney, you realize how truly creative and beautiful AI art can be. It is inspiring and terrifying at the same time! The question is, how will we photographers use AI to help us, or will it eventually replace us? For this creative beauty photo shoot, we decided to use AI as a source of inspiration. I collaborated with fashion designer Lory Sun (@lorysunartistry) who has used Midjourney to help create inspiration for today’s headpiece. She prompted a wide range of headpiece creations and decided to ‘recreate’ this avant-garde rhinestone headpiece for our photo shoot. Rather than see AI as a friend or enemy, we are approaching it as a useful source of inspiration for our collaborations. Lory closely replicated the AI headpiece reference, and I decided to take the photographic side of the equation in a totally different direction. For this shoot I used the following key ingredients: Headpiece: ° Rhinestone headpiece by Lory Sun Artistry, inspired by AI art created on Midjourney Lighting: ° Main Light: We used a 10-degree grid centered on the subject’s face. This created a hard and concentrated area of light. ° Fill Light: A 1x4ft strip softbox (with a grid) was used to fill in the shadows under the chin and lower part of the dress. ° Background light: We used a bare strobe with no modifier to create separation on the cloud background. Background: The background was a printed sky scene from a company called Kate Backdrops. I wanted to create a surreal and perhaps ‘goddess-like’ energy to the shot. By shooting at F4, I put the background slightly out of focus.n Atmosphere: To create a sense of a dreamlike atmosphere in the shot, I used two filters and a smoke machine. I stacked a Tiffen 4 Point Star Filter to create a starburst effect on the rhinestones and a black pro mist to soften the skin tones and highlights. Finally, I used a Smoke Genie to create small plumes of smoke around the subject to mimic the texture of the clouds.
