I started my channel with two goals in mind: to focus on my weight loss for 3 years and to lose 300 pounds. I knew from past experiences that I needed a lifestyle change and not just another fad diet. I also knew that I needed to set a goal weight lower and closer to a healthy weight than any I had before. I knew these were lofty goals, so I started my channel to hold myself accountable, and maybe even garner a sense of community in the process. I am 40 years old and married. My wife and I have four young children. I have been overweight my entire life. Like so many others, I have tried every diet program, exhausted myself with exercise, and purchased every weight loss gadget I could get my hands on. The result of all that was short term success, then catastrophic failure. Followed by excessive weight gain. Fast forward to October 2020, and I knew I needed to make a change in my life. I was well over 500lbs, and watching my weight continue to creep upwards. My legs were extremely swollen and had sores developing on them. I’ve suffered from severe sleep apnea for 20 years at this point, and probably a host of other medical problems. So, I started my Youtube channel and my challenge. With a starting weight of 520lbs I knew the fastest way to get the initial pounds off was going to be by fasting. I started my challenge by planning on doing an extended water fast followed by a healthy diet. Going into the challenge I didn’t know what that was going to be. The focus was to get as far away from my current diet as possible and to eat less processed food. While fasting, my goal was to educate myself as much as possible. I started in the same place any great researcher would - I got on Youtube. While looking for my answers, I stumbled across some videos about the True North Clinic. I started looking into the clinic and was curious as to what they recommended their patients eat to refeed. When I saw they were suggesting that people eat a WFPB SOS free diet, I was amazed. Nobody was talking about that and fasting. And here is this place that has had 20,000+ people come through their doors saying to eat plants. They were already doing something many considered crazy by having people fast. Why would they put any unnecessary stigma on themselves by having people eat this "crazy vegan diet"? Unless maybe it works! I picked up, and by picked up I mean my earbuds, The Pleasure Trap audiobook. I cannot express enough the insight this book has given me. I was hooked from the start. Came home and told my wife we needed to change to this diet and we jumped in with both feet. Like I said when I started I weighed 520 lbs. I water fasted for a total of 1,000hrs (42ish days) and lost 90lbs. Over the course of the first year I was able to lose an additional 110 lbs, bringing my total weight loss to 200 lbs. Over the past year I have struggled to stay consistent with eating a WFPB SOS free diet.
