Limit Cycles - Dynamical Systems | Lecture 21

For the past few lectures we have been discussing closed orbits in planar dynamical systems. Here we continue this introduction to closed orbits by considering limit cycles. Limit cycles are isolated closed orbits and much like fixed points they can be stable, unstable, or semi-stable. We illustrate the existence of limit cycles in two examples, including the celebrated Van der Pol oscillator. The Van der Pol oscillator exhibits a separation of timescales wherein there is a periodic trade off of fast evolution followed by slow evolution that can be understood through phase plane analysis. Read more about the Van der Pol oscillator here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_der... This course is taught by Jason Bramburger for Concordia University.
