Foraging Goldenrod and Making Tincture

In this video, we will explore the process of foraging goldenrod and making a tincture. Goldenrod is a vibrant and versatile herb that is commonly found in North America. Its bright yellow flowers and feathery leaves make it a visually appealing plant to forage. Foraging goldenrod is best done during the late summer and early fall when the plant is in full bloom. Look for goldenrod in open fields, meadows, and along roadsides. It is important to ensure that you have permission to forage on the land you choose. Cut the goldenrod stalks just above the ground level, leaving enough of the plant for it to regenerate in the following seasons. Once you have gathered a sufficient amount of goldenrod, the next step is to make a tincture. A tincture is a concentrated herbal extract that preserves the medicinal properties of the plant. To make a goldenrod tincture, you will need the following materials: 1. Clean glass jar with a tight-fitting lid 2. Freshly foraged goldenrod 3. High-proof alcohol, such as vodka or grain alcohol (at least 80 proof) Start by thoroughly washing and drying the glass jar to ensure it is clean and sterile. Next, finely chop the goldenrod flowers and leaves and place them into the jar. Fill the jar about two-thirds full with the chopped goldenrod. Pour the high-proof alcohol over the goldenrod, making sure to completely cover the plant material. Screw the lid tightly on the jar and shake it gently to mix the contents. Store the jar in a cool, dark place for at least six weeks, allowing the alcohol to extract the beneficial compounds from the goldenrod. During this time, shake the jar occasionally to ensure proper extraction. After six weeks, strain the tincture through a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a clean glass bottle. Squeeze the plant material to extract as much liquid as possible. Discard the spent goldenrod. Your goldenrod tincture is now ready to use. It can be taken orally by diluting a few drops in water or added to topical preparations such as salves or lotions. Goldenrod tincture is known for its anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and antiseptic properties.
