We converted our tie stall barn to a loose bedded pack area for our milking cows in the winter months. The skid steer in this video is cleaning out the manure pack in what used to be the tie stalls and feed manger. The opposite side of the barn has a feed rail. We run 40-50 head in this converted barn. It used to be an 82 stall barn. The challenge became finding a skid steer with enough power that fit in the barn for cleanout. The ceiling in the barn shown here is higher than the heifer barn. It's even tighter in that barn. Took a little getting used to maneuvering in tight spaces but the visibility on this skid steer is great. You are able to see your tires from the cab. We still currently have the barn cleaner chain and gutter in place(we placed boards in the gutter to cross). We may remove this next year and go to a push out system. Small changes at a time. Very happy with this unit! The changes to the barn made it much more efficient for my husband and I as we are the sole operators for the farm. Cows in this system for us are cleaner than when we had them tied. They spend 8-10 hours in the barn at night in the winter months and the rest of the time is outside bale fed. We created hot boxes around the water system to prevent it from freezing. Dry cows and heifers are managed in other barns on bedded packs.
