Shimano Aldebaran BFS XG: Catching Trout on 1/16th oz Jerkbait & Avail Microcast Spool

Full review of the reel: https://fishingdiscoveries.com/shiman... Super-tuning the 2016 Shimano Aldebaran BFS XG with one of the ultralight Avail microcast spools lets you cast extremely light lures on a baitcaster reel. The Avail 16ALD15R spool is just 1.5mm deep and weighs only 4.9g. With the addition of the (required) extra magnets to the FTB (Finesse Tune Brake) casting brakes, the Avail spool gains the full benefit of dynamic braking during each cast. The reel itself is fitted with Shimano's X-ship system drive (where the pinion is supported by bearings at both ends), plus oversize micro-module gears - whose teeth are cold-forged and not cut for greater precision. When coupled with a magnesium "Hagane" metal body, Shimano have managed to create a reel weighing only 130g (4.6 oz). The full specification list is given in the review article linked above - but all the numbers in the world don't mean much compared to the actual experience of catching a fish. Here, on a quick trial session on a small trout stream, I made a very short vlog episode to capture that experience. There's no fancy camerawork or flashy post-production effects - just a first person perspective of casting an ultralight, suspension jerkbait (MajorCraft Zoner Minnow 50SP) and having a wild trout smash the bait on the first few turns of the reel handle. Great fun on ultralight baitcasting (Bait Finesse System or BFS) gear and 4lb Berkley Trilene 100% fluorocarbon line. Enjoy! Paul
