In 1987 the infamous grim reaper advertisement warning that AIDS had the potential to kill more Australians than World War II. That didn't happen, thanks to Australia's public health response which remains widely regarded as one of the best in the world. What's not so well understood is the crucial role that volunteers played at that time. Against a backdrop of fear and homophobia, people volunteered in vast numbers with the aim of saving people's lives and easing the suffering of those who were dying. Their stories are part of a new book called In The Eye Of The Storm: Volunteers and Australia's Response to the HIV/AIDS Crisis. The Drum's Eliza Harvey has more.
