Style: Swing, usually taken at an up tempo. Form: A-A-B-A (32 Bars) [8-8-8-8] Key: C Major Harmony/Overview: This composition is based on the Cole Porter standard "What Is This Thing Called Love?", however it is reharmonized generously with Coltrane's signature changes. What would have otherwise been straightforward II - V's are made much more complex through the equal division of the octave in Major 3rd's; Gmi7 - C7 - Fmi instead becomes Gmi7 - Ab7 - DbMaj7 - E7 - AMaj7 - C7 - Fmi. To make matters more obscure the bass and piano also play an ostinato figure throughout entire duration of the A sections, remaining solely on C5. The title of this composition is a play on the Tadd Dameron contrafact "Hot House", and it refers to the Fifth House in astrology which deals with creativity and artistic pursuits. Recordings: Not Coltrane's most widely known composition, it has been recorded just under a dozen times to date. It was first recorded on December 2, 1959 and was released in 1961 on the album Coltrane Jazz.
