Hell's Hills 2024

Hell’s Hills certainly lived up to its name. April 6th, 2024 we went to Smithville, TX to participate in the 25k Endurance Run, sponsored, managed, and produced by Tejas Trails. They hold this event annually at Rocky Hill Ranch. You can check out event information, results, and registration at www.tejastrails.com/hellshills. What an awesome event and a surprisingly challenging course. This was our first trail run. All of our previous endurance races have been on the road. This was a completely different animal, not just in terms of the physical challenge, but it was a vastly different community of athletes. It is clear the trail running endurance athlete is competing solely with self. Those attending were kind, supportive, and seemed to leave their egos at home, even though we met a few old guys who were there to run 50 miles of Hell’s Hills as fast as possible. One 60+ year old man knew he would probably not complete the 50 miler before cutoff, well into the night, but he planned to give it all he had, as a test of his limits. Interesting and inspiring people, to say the least. Lady continues to inspire me. These days, I am less of a competitive “athlete,” and more of her running crew. We finished the 25K in 4.5 hours. We did not break any world speed records, but we had a great time and experienced something new, something we plan to continue. She has already booked our next three races with Tejas Trails. The best way to learn your limits is to exceed them. Finding your physical and mental limits is a great way to learn more about yourself and identify the areas in life where you should prioritize your time. Taking to a trail in open air, sweating, and pushing your boundaries is a great way to accomplish this. Visit Tejas Trails online, find a race, and go run. Your skill level does not matter. Your speed does not matter. Just don’t die! You will find those on the trail to be awesome and supportive. If you go, I hope you take as much from an event as we took from Hell’s Hills 2024.
