The Old Mission Dam in San Diego's Mission Trails Regional Park has been around for a long time. Construction started in 1803, when the area was a territory of Spain, and when completed it helped to bring a stable water supply to Mission San Diego. The dam wasn't in use long, with Mexico ending the age of the missions in the 1830s, the dam was repaired and put back into use a few times in the late 1800s. Now, it is a California and National Historic landmark, and probably the oldest dam in the state. In this video we take a look around the dam, talk about its history, and head downstream to a site where evidence of pre-contact use by the Kumeyaay people is very visible.
