BUGLE ROCK (Kahale Bande)

Bugle Rock (Kahale Bande) is a massive rock in South Bangalore (Basavanagudi) of Karnataka. Kempegowda II (who came to power in 1585) built four watchtowers to set limits for Bangalore’s expansion, which included a tower on Bugle Rock. It is said that at sunset a sentry would blow the bugle and hold a torch (Kannada:panju). This was done to inform people that everything was safe at that location and to give a warning bugle call to alert the citizens of any intruders into the city. Bugle Rock has been developed with densely tree-lined park by the Horticulture Department of the Government of Karnataka and is considered walkers paradise. 750 to 1000 visitors (70% of them senior citizens) visit the park everyday. The outer wall of an old water tank has murals of famous people of Bangalore and Karnataka like Kempe Gowda I, Sir.M.Vishveshvarayya behind the statue of D.V.Gundappa. An amphitheatre which can accomodate 300 people, has also been developed in the park. The Hindu temple Dodda Basavana Gudi or Bull Temple and Ganesha temple are in the limits of this park. It is said that Bugle Rock was the place where D.V.Gundappa used to meet Masti Venkatesh Iyengar, journalist P.R.Ramaiya (one of the founders of Kannada journalism),artist A.N.Subbarao (founder of Kalamandira school of Art), lawyers M.P.Somashekhara Rao and Nittoor Srinivasa Rao (who later became the Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court) and several other people like Prof.V.T.Srinivasan, founder and principal of Vijaya college, Bangalore. The park has been named in honour of T.R.Shamanna, a humanitarian and local politician. Source: Wikipedia Music: www.bensound.com
