PA Design: Steve Cripps's Clipping Harmonic Contours

Traditional RF PA design techniques seek to create current waveforms having a high second harmonic content, resulting in enhanced efficiency, only to be shorted out by the passive matching network to remove any harmonic content from the voltage waveform. Recently there has been much attention and evolution on the so-called continuous PA modes, which allow for the generation of a quadrature second harmonic component, thus easing the bandwidth limitation on the shorted harmonic requirement. But continuous modes still assume a purely reactive second harmonic termination which will always be compromised in broader band designs. A recent paper has presented a more general formulation for the characterization of the impact of second harmonic terminations using a graphical aide termed “clipping contours.” This presentation will revisit this theory and its applications in RFPA design.
