Discovery of a New Strain of HIV

Today we announced a team of our scientists identified a new subtype of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), called HIV-1 Group M, subtype L. The findings show the role next-generation genome sequencing is playing in helping researchers stay one step ahead of mutating viruses and avoiding new pandemics. "All of the viruses that we study really are just a plane ride away,” says Mary Rodgers, Ph.D., a principal scientist and head of Abbott’s Global Viral Surveillance Program. “The discovery of this new strain of HIV reminds us of why the work we do at Abbott is so important. If we can prevent even one person from becoming infected with HIV or hepatitis, then we've done our jobs." We created the Global Viral Surveillance Program 25 years ago to monitor HIV and hepatitis viruses and identify mutations, which helps ensure our diagnostic tests remain up to date.
