With U.N. observers filling out verification forms, the first of an estimated 1-thousand 600 troops loaded equipment and supplies on to two Antonov-12s to fly to Kigali from Kindu - 330 kilometers (205 miles) west of the Rwandan border. All the troops are expected to be withdrawn by Wednesday (September 18) from Kindu, which serves as a base for the Rwandan army troops. Arriving at Kigali International airport, the troops were met by Rwandan Prime Minister, Bernard Makuza, and other government officials. Speaking beside soldiers singing and dancing on the tarmac, Makuza called on the international community to help keep the peace. The Rwandan troop pullout is part of a South African-mediated Congo-Rwanda accord signed on July 30. The Democratic Republic of Congo agreed to locate, demobilise, disarm and repatriate former Rwandan Hutu militiamen, the Interahamwe, responsible for the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. At least half a million people, most of them minority Tutsis, died in a government-orchestrated 100-day slaughter. Rwanda has declined to say how many troops it has in DR Congo or how large its army is. But unofficial estimates put the number at between 20-thousand and 30-thousand.
