The 2019 Kia Sorento, which debuted at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show with freshened styling, an updated interior, and new safety and infotainment technologies. The 2019 Sorento continues in L, LX, EX, SX, and SXL trim levels. All versions have a new grille, along with new headlights, taillights, and bumpers. The tailgate is revised, and three new wheel designs debut in 17-inch or 19-inch sizes. Choose the EX, SX, or SXL, and LED taillights are standard. The SX and SXL further add LED headlights. A set of LED fog lights is reserved for the top SXL trim. Inside, Kia spruces up the 2019 Sorento’s cabin with revised trim, air vents, and instrumentation. The center console is reworked, and the Sorento gets a new steering wheel and shift knob for 2019. The standard infotainment system includes a 7-inch touchscreen display and both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone projection systems. Get a Sorento equipped with the new-and-improved navigation system, and the screen increases in size. Wireless device charging is also available, a new upgrade for 2019. Harman Kardon supplies the optional premium sound system. Equipped with 10 speakers, it pumps out 630 watts of power and features both Clari-Fi music restoration technology and a new Quantum Logic surround sound system. Comfort improvements include power lumbar adjustment for the front seat passenger in SX and SXL trims, as well as a standard third-row seat in all Sorentos. New Terracotta and Mahogany leather colors debut for the SX and SXL trim levels. Fold the handy 40/20/40-split second-row seat and 50/50-split third-row seat, and the Sorento can carry up to 74 cu.-ft. of cargo. That is on the smaller side of the midsize crossover SUV spectrum, and is one of the few complaints that can be lodged against the vehicle. Kia drops the turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine from the Sorento lineup for 2019. That leaves a 185-horsepower, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, and a 290-horsepower, 3.3-liter V6 bolted to a new 8-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard with all-wheel drive an option. New for 2019, a Smart Shift & Drive feature replaces the previous Drive Mode Select system. It automatically switches between Eco, Smart, and Sport driving modes depending on how the SUV is driven, or the driver can choose one and leave it there, the Sorento behaving accordingly. When properly equipped with a V6 engine and AWD, the Sorento tows up to 5,000 pounds. Also, Kia has confirmed that it is working on a diesel engine option for the SUV, an intriguing notion. Kia provides a suite of safety systems for the 2019 Sorento, and now they’re standard equipment for EX, SX, and SXL trims. The package includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, a blind spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alert, an adaptive cruise control system, and a 360-degree surround view monitor. New additions for 2019 include a driver monitoring system and lane departure warning with lane keeping assist. Structurally, unchanged, the 2019 Sorento is likely to remain a crash-test rock star. In federal government testing, the 2018 model got 5-star ratings in all assessments except rollover resistance, for which it earned a 4-star rating. Over at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2018 Sorento received “Good” ratings for all crash-test assessments (it has not been tested in the new front passenger small offset frontal collision examination). Additionally, the IIHS gives the Sorento a “Superior” rating for crash avoidance and mitigation, and “Acceptable” ratings for its headlights and child safety seat anchors.
