Kali Puja, also known as Shyama Puja or Mahanisha Puja, is a festival, originating from the Indian subcontinent, dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali, celebrated on the new moon day (Dipannita Amavasya) of the Hindu month. Fatakesto Kali is the landmark Kali Puja of Kolkata. Standing tall for the past six decades. In the 70s and 80s, puja was a craze among the residents of north Calcutta. Its grand immersion procession, illumination, and attendance of celebrities from Bollywood and Tollywood made it the talk of the town. Congress strongman Krishna Chandra Dutta had started this Kali puja in 1957 from Guru Prasad Chowdhury Lane in central Kolkata. Later it was shifted to nearby Sitaram Ghosh Street, where Dutta also lived. The name of Fatakesto is on the name of the founder of the Puja, Krishna Chandra Dutta alias Kesto. Some say that in a deadly attack, he received injuries in many places in his body. So, Fata was added to his nickname(daaknaam) Kesto. Fata, a Bengali word, means split or crack in English. While some say that, he had scars of smallpox on his face. So, his friends used to call him Fata Kesto. Presently, the puja is held under the banner of Naba Jubak Sangha, but it is more popular as Fatakesto Kali puja.
