I'm horrified by all the Blender tutorials on-line that start out by saying things like "press A to do this, then B to do that, then Alt- C to do something else then Ctrl-D to....", etc. It seems like every key on the keyboard does 3 things (lower case, control, and alt) and you are required to memorize all these shortcuts before you can do anything in Blender. This can be intimidating. I'm here to tell you YOU DON'T NEED TO MEMORIZE SHORTCUT KEYS! Like any other graphical user interface Blender has a menu (unfortunately several sets of them) and all those short cuts can be done the long-cut way by using the menus. Usually the menus make more sense than the shortcut! Once you find something in the menus, you will see other related commands nearby that you might want to use. For example, in Edit mode there is a Select menu that has an All command to select all the vertexes in your object. Right below that is Select-None, Select-Invert and all sorts of other ways to select things you will eventually find useful. So the menus help teach you more commands. And like any other menu system you are used to using, many commands in the menus will have little hints next to them telling you how to start them from the keyboard. Those are the shortcuts. For example, in the Select menu next to All there is the letter A. Now you know why those other tutorials keep telling you to hit A! Under Select-All, you see the shortcut for Select-None (Alt-A) and so on. When you get tired of selecting the same command over and over again, look for a shortcut. The menus will teach you the shortcuts this way, so there is no reason to start by memorizing them!
