The EU's Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue: Prospects for Peacebuilding in the Balkans

A panel discussion on the current negotiations over Kosovo and the role of the European Union, with Dr. Susan Woodward, Professor at the CUNY Graduate Center, Ivan Vejvoda, Permanent Fellow at The Institute for Human Sciences (IWM), Dr. Radmila Nakarada, Professor Emerita at the University of Belgrade, founder of the peace studies program in Serbia, and Dr. Pavle Kilibarda, a postdoctoral researcher at Faculty of Law of the University of Geneva. The discussion is moderated by Sandra Davidovic, Ph.D. program in political science, the CUNY Graduate Center. The EU-facilitated Belgrade-Pristina dialogue has entered a dynamic new phase, against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine and ongoing divisions within the EU on its foreign policy, including Kosovo’s status. The newest Franco-German proposal on Kosovo has ignited attention in the Balkans and across Europe. It signifies a continuation of past, stalled peace processes as well as bolstering the EU’s role as a regional peacebuilder. Is it a viable solution to the Kosovo problem? What are its implications for Kosovo’s international status and Serbian position towards it? What does the EU have to offer to the region twenty years after first promising an opportunity for accession?
