http://www.tomrichey.net When we were little, we were all told that the Pilgrims and other settlers in the Massachusetts Colony came to the New World for religious freedom. Politicians, such as Ronald Reagan and Mitt Romney, have invoked John Winthrop's idea of a "City on a Hill" as a metaphor for the United States. But did the Puritan and Separatist settlers really go to Massachusetts to pursue religious freedom in the sense that we think of it today? Upon further examination, the religious commonwealth established by John Winthrop and the Puritan leaders of Massachusetts did not promote religious freedom, tolerance, or diversity, but instituted a system of religious conformity. Those who challenged this system of religious conformity, such as Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson, were exiled from the colony. This lecture is divided into three parts. The second and third parts will focus on Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson, respectively. In the AP US History (APUSH) chronological framework, this lecture falls within APUSH Period 2 and correlates with Chapter 2 and/or Chapter 3 of most APUSH textbooks.
