Hungry Ghost Festival Penang, Malaysia, Bukit Mertajam | Chinese Buddhism Festival

The Hungry Ghost Festival at Pek Kong Cheng was one of the best festivals I've ever experienced in my life. The vibrant energy, rich cultural heritage, and warm hospitality of the people made it truly exceptional. The streets were adorned with colorful lanterns, and the air was filled with the aroma of delicious food offerings. The lively performances, the sense of unity among the community, and the connection with my roots made it a festival I will cherish forever. Pek Kong Cheng is not just a place; it's a place where traditions come alive, and it holds a special place in my heart as one of the best festival experiences of my life. The Hungry Ghost Festival, also known as the Yu Lan Festival or Zhongyuan Festival, is a traditional Chinese festival that is observed primarily by people of Chinese descent around the world. It typically falls on the 15th day of the seventh month in the Chinese lunar calendar, which is usually in August or September in the Gregorian calendar. The exact date may vary from year to year. The Hungry Ghost Festival is rooted in Buddhist and Taoist beliefs and is dedicated to honoring deceased ancestors and appeasing wandering spirits. It is believed that during this time, the gates of the afterlife are opened, and the spirits of deceased ancestors and restless ghosts are allowed to roam the earthly realm for a month. These spirits are thought to be hungry, hence the name "Hungry Ghosts," and people perform various rituals to ensure their ancestors are well-fed and appeased, so they don't bring bad luck or misfortune upon the living. Here are some common practices and customs associated with the Hungry Ghost Festival: Offerings: Families prepare elaborate offerings of food, incense, and other items on altars to please the wandering spirits. These offerings may include fruits, rice, tea, and even mock money made of paper, which is burned as a symbol of sending wealth to the deceased. Burning of Joss Paper: Joss paper, also known as "ghost money" or "spirit money," is burned as an offering to the spirits. People believe that the smoke carries these items to the afterlife so that their ancestors can use them. Theatrical Performances: In some regions, there are live performances of Chinese operas, dramas, and puppet shows during the festival. These performances are meant to entertain both the living and the spirits. Floating Lanterns: In certain areas, people release lit lanterns onto rivers or lakes to guide the spirits back to the afterlife. It's a beautiful and symbolic gesture. Avoidance of Certain Activities: Some people avoid swimming, staying out late at night, or moving into a new home during the Hungry Ghost Festival, as it is believed that these activities may attract the attention of malevolent spirits. Respect for the Deceased: People may visit ancestral gravesites to pay their respects and clean the graves during this period. Taoist Rituals: Taoist priests often perform rituals and ceremonies to protect the living from negative influences and to help the deceased find peace. 00:00 - Hungry Ghost Moon Introduction 00:33 - Strating to ExploreTaoist Tradition and Festival 02:31 - Da Shi Ye, The King of Hell 04:05 - Performance for Da Shi Ye, The King of Hell 06:58 -Offerings for Ghosts and Gods 08:45 - Pek Kong Cheng Temple In Bukit Mertajam, Penang 10:14 - Zhong Yuan 12:03 - Burning Everything In Penang Location (Placename): Pek Kong Cheng, Penang, Malaysia " https://maps.app.goo.gl/K8BGWKgZrJ4ub...
