The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers (DDGs) have the distinction of having the longest production run of any post–World War II US Navy surface combatant, having entered service thirty years ago in 1991. Sixty-eight of the warships have been completed and are in active service, with seven more being built and three more on order. The questions about what the Large Surface Combatant needs to be, as well as significant pressure on the annual shipbuilding budget, are forcing the service to consider what the Arleigh Burke program will look like beyond the current multiyear contract for the Flight III configuration, according to Program Executive Officer for Ships Rear Adm. Bill Galinis. The Large Surface Combatant (LSC) program is intended to replace both the Ticonderoga-class cruiser and the DDG-51s, and previous Pentagon documents indicated that LSC acquisition would begin in Fiscal Year 2023, following closely behind the current contract for Flight III DDGs, which expires in 2022.
