Waterfalls in the BWCA | Beaver Dam - 2024 Day 4

Thursday was our worst chance for wind. Winchell was probably our worst lake to get stuck in wind. I had an alarm set for the sunrise but didn’t need it as I woke at 4:50. Winchell’s geography doesn’t lend itself to great sunrises/sunsets with the massive bluffs and forests, but I got some color in the sky. Once again the clouds kept any actual sun away. I started a fire and got breakfast going. We had planned a trip to the waterfall since we just needed to cross the lake and paddle down 3 campsites. I wanted to get in the water before the afternoon winds kicked up. I finally woke the other tent up at 8:45 letting them know I would hang their food back up and leave without them at 10 am. They eventually found their way out and met the 10 am deadline by forgoing breakfast. It was a white knuckle paddle for some of the inexperienced paddlers to make it over to the waterfalls but it was well worth it. In fact, it looked like it had only recently dried up enough to make it up the normal path to the top. Beavers had flooded the entire top of the bluff that was previously just spongy ground. We ate an early lunch making sure we stayed there longer than it took to paddle over. Before we made it back to camp, we detoured to the beaver dam. Previous years had seen a trickle of water heading from Winchell to Gaskin. This also was a steady stream. We paddle over and hopped out for a walk around. All total, we paddled 2.6 miles. The previous day was hot enough to strip down to underwear and hop in the water. With the wind whipping, we put our sweatshirts on this afternoon while our travel mates slept. Nick spotted a smallmouth bass in the water and attempted fishing with a small but full size tree. He was unsuccessful. Later in the evening, the winds calmed down a bit and we enjoyed a fire. I was in bed again about 10 pm. The forecast for Friday was rain and potential thunderstorms at 11 am. We agreed to get up and 5 and leave early. There was no waking up in the middle of the night for any photos with the clouds.
