Decluttering space: Meet Moriba Jah, a space environmentalist

Moriba Jah wants to clean up space debris and “wants to make the stakes of orbital congestion abundantly clear.” As the tech billionaires, like Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos, kicked off a “new space race” last year, the number of active satellites more than quadrupled in the last ten years, with an estimated 500,000 human-made objects orbiting Earth right now, most of which is junk. For Jah, the near-Earth space should be considered an ecosystem, just as worthy as protecting the Earth’s land, air and water. To address space congestion, Jah built AstriaGraph, a visualizer that “displays the positions of all actively-tracked objects in the sky.” The open-source traffic monitor is presented in a 3D display, using data from satellites and ground-based sensors. With these extraterrestrial objects whipping around our planet at sometimes 15 times the speed of a bullet, the challenges of the sustainability of space exploration are already becoming clear.
