There are so many amazing songs in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, so it was difficult to pick what to do first. The themes from the phenomenal endgame are definitely on the radar, but this song stuck out as a great starting point. I mean come on, hardstyle in a Pokemon game? Absolutely unexpected and absolutely a welcome surprise. Even with an electronic genre like this, it lent itself to guitar in a way that was pretty fun to play. This base song to work with was pretty much complete as-is in terms of song structure. Of course it’s intended to loop but each loop is long enough that one run through is plenty of time for a full piece of music. The challenges were twofold: how to translate a totally electronic style of music to rock band instruments and where to take creative liberties, if any. The first was solved by using a palm mute quarter note rhythm to mimic that crazy bass synth and the second was solved by introducing little enhancements here and there. Repeating the same section? Let’s try adding in some tremolo picking. And that chorus was just begging to be harmonized. I do have to say, while this was an absolute blast to perform, I’m torn on the usage of the 8 string for rhythm work. On one hand, low distorted notes in metal is the standard and nothing compares to the low growl of this instrument! On the other, there’s more harmonic power in the cliche hardstyle sound which has this sort of buzz that’s different than hitting the 8th string. I think overall it’s good that in some parts and in some ways this song turned out different than the original, as this wasn’t meant to be a 1 to 1 duplication to begin with.
