Exactly Where to Invest Your Time and Money When Starting a Video Production Business

When I first started to figure out how to start and grow a video production company, I wasted a ton of money buying things that had zero impact. So I wanted to make this video to share my story and share what I invested in that finally worked. Hopefully, this checklist can help you save some time, money, and a lot of frustration in creating a successful video production company. Video Production Company Checklist: https://www.filmmakingmentor.com/star... Before trying to create a video production company, I was just freelancing as a camera operator and DP. Things were pretty simple. Get a gig (post on gig platforms, word of mouth, social media), use the money to buy more gear, raise my rate, charge rental for gear and repeat. So when starting a production company, I thought I should do the same. I spent money on office space I really didn’t need on day one and I spent money on more gear I didn’t need. That kept me exactly where I was. Then, I found something that I thought was going to change my business. I found this software that promised me, clients, using email marketing. This is before I knew anything about marketing. Basically, this software would help you send emails to clients, and depending on how they interacted with the email, they would get segmented into different funnels, which would be easier to sell to. The big issue was that I had to pay thousands upfront and then, 300-400 per month. That was far more than I could spend. But I was sure it would work. Long story short, it didn’t work and this is why. I didn’t put enough time into it to figure it out. I kept being booked as a freelancer. Now, instead of sticking with it, I gave up and went to the next thing, Google ads. This time, I had my sister. She worked at Google at the time. So she helped me set up my Adwords. But again, she wanted me to spend $500 bucks a week. This is pretty reasonable actually, but I was broke. So I spent closer to $100. It just wasn’t enough to get enough data to make it work. So I gave up again. Finally, I spent some money on education for free marketing tools. SEO and content marketing. That took a lot of my time, but since it was an ongoing investment, I was able to stick with it long enough to make it work. I also invested in making a much better website through what I was learning and I invested in getting better examples of my skills (I shot free videos to use as demos) And eventually, both google ads and email marketing worked well for my business too. But only after I had enough revenue to invest and I stopped focusing on gear.
