The Punakha Dzong, is the administrative center of Punakha District in Punakha. Constructed in 1637–38, it is the second oldest and second-largest dzong in Bhutan and one of its most majestic structures. Punakha Dzong was the administrative center and the seat of the Government of Bhutan until 1955 when the capital was moved to Thimphu. In view of the healthy climate in the region, Punakha is the winter capital of Bhutan. A covered wooden cantilever bridge crossing the Mo Chu River was built together with the Dzong in ancient tradition of crafts in wood carving, masonry, metal work, painting, and several other skills. Notable images, statues and paintings are displayed in the Dzong. These include murals depicting life story of Buddha. The Dzong has over 200 new religious images, and several other treasures.
