Flipping Indoor Cannabis Plants from Vegetative to Flowering Cycles

Flipping Indoor Cannabis Plants From Vegetative to Flowering Cycles Professor DeBacco The Change Growers growing photoperiod dependent or even auto flowering plants need to realize their plants will need to go through a shift from producing leaves to flowers. While with photoperiod dependent strains growers have more control over when this happens there needs to be a consideration for how to best prepare the plant to maximize the efficiency. Also, if you are using light sources that have strong red wavelengths (Ex. HPS) this will increase the tendency for plants to stretch. Photoperiod For photoperiod dependent cultivars a simple switch from 18+hr of continuous light to 12hr will shift the plant at any age to focus on flower production and development. Autoflowers are based more on the days old and the “day” that the plants will shift from vegetative to flowering will depend on the exact strain grown. Light Limitations: Photoperiod Dependent With photoperiod dependent strains this will only allow growers to provide light for 12hr so growers should be maximizing the light intensity and supplementing with carbon dioxide so their plants can use a high light intensity since the duration will be no more than 12hr per day. Goal is to try and maintain a high DLI (Daily Light Integral) Light Limitations: Photoperiod Independent (Autos) However the advantage of autoflowers being photoperiod independent is that they can handle longer durations of light to help maximize light use which is important consideration for growers since the days of plant production are limited. While cost of running lights (and potential cooling) should be factored in, running lights 20hr at high intensity and with CO2 can help maximize the harvest from these plants. This will maximize the DLI to the plants. Ceiling Height If a grow space is ceiling height limited this can impact when the flip is made for photoperiod dependents and/or the pruning strategy for autoflowers. Remember that just because the plants are in “flower development” mode it does not mean that they will stop growing. Sativa dominate strains will stretch more than indica dominate in morphology but regardless the increase in height can be around 50% This is also important when considering the distance plants should be kept for the lights you are using. Overall this height limitation tends to be more of an issue for smaller grow tents. Plant Age With autoflowers the plants age will determine the transition For photoperiod dependents, growers may decide to make the change in photoperiod based on the plants age to maximize productivity. The “best” age is dependent on many factors such as pruning style and physical space of growing area. However general stating point is to flip plants into flower when they have reach half of the total height that you want them to reach. Up-Potting Many growers take the time around flipping their plants to also change containers or up-pot their plants. This is typically a good idea, just be sure not to plan for everything on the same day. Ideally, the plants should be up-potted and then growers should wait about three days before altering the photoperiod to induce flowering. Planning for Stretch… Tent height = 7 feet (84 inches) Top of tent to bottom of lights is 21” with 16” spacing between plants and lights required give a total of 63 inches of grow space remaining Container is 13 inches tall resulting in a total of 50 inches of equipment height space taken up leaving 34” of plant height growing space So when plants reach 50% of possible grow space height (17 inches) the flowering photoperiod should be initiated Link to Lecture Slides: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Dkbc... 420 Magazine Source Content by Slide Title: The Change https://www.420magazine.com/community...
