RetroArch Custom UI (backgrounds, playlists, settings, etc)

This video walks you step by step through the process of customizing a RetroArch user interface (UI) from the point of a fresh install on Windows. I have had a lot of people ask me how I have my own custom icons, backgrounds, playlists, etc, so I figured I would break it down. Most of this video is just based off of my notes as I try to go through everything in a hopefully logical order and in mostly real time. I touch on a lot of the User Interface / Appearance settings within RetroArch. Topics include options related to main menu layouts, thumbnails, resizing and scaling, hiding or showing individual menu elements, customizing backgrounds, creating custom playlists with their own icons, adding custom fonts, adding screensavers, and much more. The version of RetroArch used in this example is V 1.19.1, but this information will likely hold true for future versions as well for a good time to come. Keep in mind that if you are not using the PC version of RetroArch, the settings and file structures might be very different and I cannot promise all of this will work the same. Check below for the video timestamps, important links, and other RetroArch tutorials. If you have any questions be sure and ask them in the comments and I will do my best to get back to you. When I set out to do this, I wanted to make a really quick video that addressed some of my UI settings, but that clearly did not happen how I intended it to as you can see from the length. I thought about redoing the video and making it more concise with tighter editing, but I feel like some people appreciate the detail and prefer that I go through things in real time like this, step by step, so I decided to keep it as is. Hopefully someone out there can benefit from it. CUSTOM PLAYLISTS: Import your custom playlists using the "manual scan" method under import content. For "System Name" select "Custom" which will then allow you to input a "Custom System Name" on the next line. Whatever is typed here will be the name of the custom playlist. Type the "File Extensions" (whether its zip, chd, nes, gen, m3u, iso, cue, etc) without using commas or periods. Turn on "Scan Inside Archives" if you have zipped files. You can place custom icons in RetroArch\assets\xmb\"name of icon set"\png .In order for an icon to appear next to a custom playlist, the png file must have the same name as the playlist. To show the sub icons for the content inside of the custom playlists that appears next to game titles, you do the same exact thing except you add "-content" without any spaces to the end. For example if you had a playlist called "N64 romhacks" you would name your custom icon "N64 romhacks.png" and the sub icons for individual entries "N64 romhacks-content.png" Place custom thumbnails inside RetroArch\thumbnails\"playlist name"\Named_Boxarts (or Named_Titles or Named_Snaps if applicable) and make sure that they have the same exact name as the rom file they are representing (and make sure they are PNG files) I have typed out English subtitles for those who need/want them and they should be 100% accurate. -.--.- TIMESTAMPS -.--.- 00:00 Intro, background, UI examples 01:50 Download and setup/prep 02:30 Menu styles and layout settings 04:05 Thumbnails and boxart options 05:40 Background customization and settings 07:33 Text color and custom fonts 08:40 Change Icon Theme 09:11 Another example and tip 10:09 Other appearance settings 11:50 Menu navigation animations 12:22 Screensavers and settings 13:09 Show/hide menu elements or notifications 13:50 Playlist settings and region code removal 15:47 Import custom playlist 17:16 Custom playlist icons 19:17 Custom playlist thumbnails 20:44 Dynamic Backgrounds, OTG Gaming 21:26 Conclusion, outro and YT page info -.--.- Relevant Links -.--.- Download RetroArch: https://www.retroarch.com/?page=platf...
