Born to a wealthy family, he was destined to be a lawyer, but defied his family and became a musician instead. He was classically trained but went into composing songs for the theatre. Unlike other songwriters of that day, he often wrote his own lyrics. Porter died from complications of a horse-riding accident. "Night and Day" is a popular song by Cole Porter.
