The Famous Gold Bottom Mine - Navigating Through The Multi-Level Steep Stopes (part 2 of 3)

In this video we continue our exploration of the famous Gold Bottom Mine. After rappelling down a ladderless manway, we follow a decline shaft that leads to huge stopes, which we explore. The colorful mineral veins here are amazing and plentiful. We climbed down another manway with sketchy ladders that led deeper into the steep stopes, where huge rocks had fallen and destroyed some of the support timbers. Julie stayed up top while I descended yet another set of failing ladders, where a long water pipe that ran beside them suddenly let loose. Good thing I was roped in, or it could have knocked me off the ladder as it crashed down. After exploring that area, I rappelled down one more ladderless manway to the main level of the mine. It was quite the trip through the steep stopes. This mine was discovered in the 1880's and these upper ore bodies were mined before 1900. After 1900 the lower parts of the mine were worked. This three part series is all about the older upper workings. The underground workings of this gold, silver, lead, and copper mine are more than 7500 feet in length. It was still being worked in 1936 when the ore averaged 0.63 ounce of gold, 14.5 ounces of silver, 15.9 percent lead, and 0.6 percent copper per ton.
