Dr. Puru Dhawan in this video talks about diet, which helps a kidney patient to control creatinine levels. It becomes important for a patient to diagnose the levels of creatinine. The normal levels of creatinine in a healthy person is 0.6 to 1.2 mg/dL and it can be diagnosed by KFT or KIdney function test. Creatinine levels above 1.2 mg/dL can cause kidney failure. So, it becomes important for a kidney patient to control the levels of creatinine. If kidney is functioning properly then levels of creatinine do not increase. High creatinine levels in a patient can be controlled by following a proper diet. A healthy and proper diet not only helps the patient to lower creatinine levels but also manages it. Protein is most important and reason for high creatinine. And protein loss in urine is also known as proteinuria which results in frothy urine. In a patient, levels of creatinine, urea and potassium can be controlled by 2 ways: 1. Decreasing its formation in the body 2. Improving kidney functioning. Along with high creatinine levels, high urea levels also affects kidney's functioning. Not only diet but performing vigorous exercises also affects creatinine levels. A kidney patient must avoid fever and cold environment as it results in high creatinine levels. Controlling protein diet can help in creatinine levels. Protein free diet like chapati, rice, vegetables and fruits are recommended to kidney failure patients. At Sai Sanjivani, we recommend patients to limit the protein intake in diet as protein rich diet can cause high creatinine levels. Muscle metabolism need to be controlled by avoiding jogging, running and weight lifting exercises. It works best for the patient to take easily absorbable protein. High creatinine levels in the body causes rashes. Levels of creatinine and urea can be measured easily in labs. A kidney's functioning can be measured by GFR or Glomerular Filtration Rate test and GFR determines the stage of kidney disease. In stage 1 if the GFR levels are 90 or above, there is no such sign but only protein excretes in the urine. This stage is also known as nephrotic syndrome. In stage 2, GFR levels are 60 to 90. In this stage creatinine levels increases. In stage 3, GFR levels further decrease to 30 to 60. In stage 4, Maximum changes occur in stage 4 as GFR levels decrease to 15 to 30 and creatinine levels increases up to 3 and 4. In stage 5, when creatinine levels increases and GFR levels decrease from 15 or less. A kidney failure patient can have oats, sabutdana, poha and bread in the breakfast. Chapati, rice and green vegetables (low potassium) for lunch and chapati, rice and seasonal vegetable in the dinner.
