"How Great Thou Art" - Christian Hymn by Ben Maton // Church Organ - Salisbury

Buy my CD / download at https://ben-maton-music.square.site Filmed and recorded at St Martin's Church, Salisbury, one of England's finest acoustics with an organ to match. The specification of the organ is detailed below. St Martin's is an ancient musical centre, considerably older than Salisbury Cathedral and whose site has been a place of worship for well over 1000 years. It maintains an Anglo-Catholic tradition. More details about the church can be found at https://www.benmatonmusic.co.uk/about-5. Please SUBSCRIBE to hear more of my weekly recordings. I am determined to upload every week to share the sounds of this historic instrument and the wonderful acoustic of St Martin's, where I’m fortunate to be Director of Music and Organist. This organ is over 150 years old and retains its original mechanical (or ‘tracker’) action, which explains why the keys on the upper manual (the Swell) come down with those on the lower (the Great) when I play them. Everything is coupled together to produce a grand sound, the bass played by the feet. The mechanical action also explains why you see me constantly pulling out stops and pushing things in (note the noisy Trombone lever, final refrain). Only the blower is electric- everything else is done by hand, just like it was in 1869. Where cathedral organs nowadays have handy thumb pistons that change the sound at the touch of a button, this organ is operated by wooden stops and foot levers and all the tone colours are altered manually by the player. So it’s far more than just playing the notes! TIP: if you hold your phone sideways under your chin, you’ll hear the magnificent William Hill organ in stereo.
