What Is Microfiber? - Dane Explains

At The Rag Company, we get a lot of people asking about microfiber. Specifically: “What is it?” Today we’re gonna take a quick peek into the basics of microfiber. The first thing you need to know about this is that it’s synthetic. So, unlike cotton, microfiber is not a naturally-occurring material. The ingredients used to create this synthetic material are polyester and polyamide. Polyester creates the body & structure of the microfiber, while polyamide lends its absorbency & density. As a result of this synthetic composition, microfiber develops an electrostatic charge, which attracts dust & debris, making cleaning just that much easier. Compare that with cotton, which maintains a neutral charge, attracting….well, nothing. When viewed under a microscope, the cross-section of a microfiber thread looks a lot like a star, or an asterisk, whereas a cotton fiber just looks like a circle. This star-shape allows microfiber to trap debris inside the fiber, pulling material up & away from the surface you’re working on. This includes the removal of 99.9% of surface-bacteria, although to kill the bacteria, you will need to wash the towel or use one that has been silver-infused. Meanwhile, the circle-shape of a cotton fiber only serves to push contaminants around, potentially resulting in a streaky-finish, not to mention the potential for scratches or marring, as well as leaving most bacteria behind. So, when it comes right down to it, microfiber is THE choice for efficiency, quality & value.
