Of all the conversational topics at hand, there are few that spark as much passion (and sometimes downright argument) as the debate on one's musical preferences. With a vast array of genre's to choose from -one even more confusing than the other-, we might wonder why we can't just have all of them skillfully fused into one big dynamically diverse mix. The truth is, fusing different genre's can be a tough nut to crack, with only a few talented musicians managing to do it well. Twenty One Pilots, the brainchild of Ohio college friends Tyler Joseph, Nick Thomas and Chris Salih, is one of those bands. Fusing alternative rock with indie pop and even rap, the band makes use of a wide array of different instruments to achieve their sound; synthesizers, a mix of acoustic and electric drums, piano, ukelele... the list just goes on and on. Following the departure of Thomas and Salih in 2011, the band's lineup has since changed into a duo, with Josh Dun now convincingly filling up the gap. After two self-released albums, 'Twenty One Pilots' in 2009 and 'Regional at Best' in 2011, the band released their debut studio album 'Vessel' on Fueled by Ramen last year; proving once and for all that doing something out of the ordinary certainly does pay off. Tyler Joseph played a few songs for us here at Metropolis Festival, where he delivered stripped down solo performances of 'House Of Gold' and 'Holding On To You'. Want to know more?
