Focus groups are groups of people chosen by a research company to give their opinions on consumer products and advertising campaigns before they get released to the general public. You’re paid for your time during these groups, with most groups paying between $50 on the low end, all the way up to over $300, usually for an hour of your time. These are conducted over videochat right from your home, because researchers have found that people are more comfortable sharing their opinions in a space they feel familiar with. Some people may think this is a scam at first, but here’s why it’s not: first of all, I’ve done it myself. Second, you might think it makes no sense for some research company to pay you for something as simple as telling them your opinion, like whether you like a certain car commercial. How could they possibly afford to pay you hundreds of dollars to sit on a call for an hour and answer their questions? They can afford to pay you this money because they’re being paid even more money by the manufacturer of these products to collect your opinions. Corporations that manufacturer large scale consumer goods have a vested interest in knowing what their consumer base will want to buy. Putting out a product that sells “ok” versus one that flies off the shelf could be the difference between millions of dollars in revenue and profits. If you’re looking to do online focus groups as a side hustle, the good news is you don’t really need any special skills to get started. However, certain focus groups will be looking for people in a certain age range or demographic, or someone with a certain skillset, so you won’t be a fit for every group you apply for. The key to success here is keeping an eye out for focus groups that DO apply to you, and I’ll tell you how to do that in just a minute. The groups I like to do pay out in money deposited directly to your Paypal account. Some other groups will pay out in an electronic prepaid debit card that you can basically use anywhere. While you can’t use that type of card to pay certain bills, it’s still almost as good as cash in my opinion. Some other groups will pay out in other type of gift cards or a points system, with the points then being able to be redeemed for cash or prizes, which I find to be a bit of a hassle. I prefer to only do focus groups where I know I’ll have cash in my account after the survey, and these are the ones we’re going to talk about.
