Despite their success in infrastructure, China has yet to build a bridge across the 20km stretch from Guangdong to Hainan. Chinese cross-sea bridges, such as the world-class Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, have displayed China's capabilities in infrastructure. However, the geographical conditions and natural disasters such as typhoons and earthquakes present a big challenge to bridge construction in the Qiongzhou Strait. The costs of constructing a bridge would also be astronomical, and economic return needs to be secured for such investments. Currently, ferries and airplanes adequately service the transport demands between these two regions. Various methods of bridge and tunnel creation are also being explored, but none have proved feasible so far. Despite these challenges, the impact of such a connection on Hainan's economic development makes its eventual completion a certainty. With continuous technological advancements, China remains optimistic about overcoming these struggles.
