There were many variations of the original 426 Hemi throughout its factory production run from 1964-75, but they were all based on the RB sized engine block. But, due to NHRA Pro Stock rules being changed to favor smaller cubic inch inline and canted valve engines, Mopar racers had to get creative in order to get the 426's massive internal dimensions downsized to an effective package that could compete with the small block Ford, Chevy and AMC engines of the day. They did this by adapting the 426 heads to the short deck, short stroke 383 B Block. Here's the history of these Elephant Engines that never were, the modifications made to the smaller wedge block needed to make the heads bolt on, and ultimately why the Hemi has become obsolete in maximum performance N/A applications.
