The main street is one of the oldest roads used on all the shores of the lake. Duingt, which is one of the smallest villages on the shores of the lake, has two castles: The castle of Ruphy or Chateauvieux dating from the 11th century was an island before. Today, it is a peninsula and one of the images of Épinal of Lake Annecy. Inside, the decorations date from the 18th century with retaining walls and terraces. The castle of Hérée (or Dhéré according to the different writings) dates from the 15th century and is ideally placed in the direction of Entrevernes. The belvedere and the cave of Notre Dame du lac overlooking the village offers a beautiful panorama of Lake Annecy. It is also the starting point for hiking on Taillefer. The name duingt could come from the Latin Duinus, name of the lords of Chateauvieux (Duin) or Dugingo, Burgundian term meaning the dune, the mound. This second explanation could evoke the elevated location where another castle was erected in the heart of Duingt.
