Chancellor of Soul, Mike Boone presents on his 'Soul Facts Show' a salute to one of the greatest underrated falsetto artist in music history. The immortal Mr. Donnie Elbert. Born on May 25, 1935 in New Orleans, La, Donnie Elbert moved with his family to Buffalo, NY at the age of 3. Elbert's love of music came when his uncle purchased him his first guitar and phonograph, along with a stack of 45 records. His mother later bought a piano, when Elbert soon began taking lessons. Donnie Elbert musical hero was the legendary, Clyde McPhatter founder of the world-reowned group, The Drifters. At 19, Elbert formed his first group, The Vibraharps. With unsuccessful releases and creative differences, Donnie left the Vibraharps and would embark on a solo career. Elbert inked a deal with Deluxe Records and release 2 classics 'What Can I Do' in 1957 and 'Have I Sinned' in 1959. Donnie soon afterwards ans signed with Vee Jay Records and issued, 'Will You Ever Be Mine'. Although it didn't chart nationally, it became extremely popular in Philadelphia Pa where it sold over 250,000 copies in reginal record sales. Donnie's career fluctuated over the years with various recordings on different labels, such as P&L, Jalynne, Cub, and Parkway. He released 'A Little Piece Of Leather' on the Gateway imprint in 1964, to no avail. That is until, record mogal Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records in the U.K. licened the song on his imprint, where it gained popularity and forced Elbert to move and take residence in England, settle and get married. In 1969, while still in the U.K. Donnie recorded a 1964 Motown-Supremes classic that would give him overdue recognition entitled 'Where Did Our Love Go'. His record label in England, did believe the song had hit potenial, so Elbert traveled back to the U.S. to secure a deal with Joe & Sylvia Robinson on their All Platinum label. Two years later, in late 1971, the imprint released 'Where Did Our Love Go', where it zooomed straight to the No. 6 position on Billboard's Soul Singles chart.
