From the PBA's Fall Tour, the final match of the PBA's 1971 Brunswick World Open between 2nd seed Don Johnson who won his semi-final match to advance to the title game against #1 seed Larry Laub. Though the Brunswick World Open was not on the PBA's Winter Tour, it offered one of the year's biggest purses, and therefore was considered an important event by the pros. Others who qualified for the championship round were #5 Gary Dickinson, #4 Johnny Petraglia and #3 Mike McGrath. Petraglia won the first two matches before bowing to Johnson, setting up this finale.
