Recorded September 2, 2008. Shetland is an archipelago in Scotland, off the northeast coast. The islands lie to the northeast of Orkney, 170 miles from the Faroe Islands and form part of the division between the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the North Sea to the east. The largest island, known as "Mainland," has an area of 374 square miles, making it the third-largest Scottish island and the fifth-largest of the British Isles. Scalloway is the largest settlement on the North Atlantic coast of Mainland, Shetland with a population of approximately 812. Until 1708 it was the capital of the Shetland Islands. Scalloway Castle was built from 1599 by Patrick Stewart, 2nd Earl of Orkney to tighten his grip on Shetland. Its site in Shetland's then capital, Scalloway, was surrounded by the sea on three sides.
