Watch an interview with Noel N. Williams, MD, FRCSI, a bariatric surgeon at Penn Medicine. "Here at Penn Medicine, I see weight loss surgery patients and of those patients who are morbidly obese and who have medical complications are morbid obesity including hypertension or high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, joint disease." "Over the last 14 or 15 years, I've done an excessive 2000 or 2 ½ thousand of these operations. In relation to laparoscopic adjustable gastric bands here at the hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, we do this operation robotically. We've been doing this for about 3 or 4 years. We have found out in using the robot for this operation, that it often can be safer and more precise." "Usually when I see patients in the clinic, I see patients who are pre-operative, in other words, had not had surgery but I also see patients who are post-op. And when you see them in the post-operative setting, their diabetes has improved and in many cases, gotten better all together. They're off all their medications including insulin. Their blood pressures better. It's very satisfying from that standpoint to see, not only that they've lost weight but more important that their overall health and medical condition is improved significantly." "I'm Dr. Noel Williams. I'm the Director of Metabolic bariatric surgery at Penn Medicine and I practice at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania."
