Across the city of Charlotte, the crown logo can be found on signs and merchandise and has been used as the city’s emblem for over 65 years, stemming from the city’s royal namesake - Queen Charlotte. Set in crowns are thousands of jewels - diamonds, sapphires, rubies and emeralds - that symbolize power and continuity of the monarchy due to their rarity. Finding quality teachers, same as mining for jewels, is a process that takes patience and a keen eye for those “one of a kind” attributes. Like the four C’s when examining a stone - color, cut, clarity and carat - Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools looks for teachers who are innovative, inclusive, inviting and inspiring. And when those characteristics have been found, a gem has been discovered. The inaugural Gem Awards will highlight educators at the school level, learning community level and at the district level, reminding teachers that their work is valued and rewarded, and that they deserve a chance to shine.
