5 Tips for Having a Successful Yard/Garage Sale

Tip#1- Set a Goal! You will need an estimated inventory of 3-5X of your set goal, so if you want to make $1k you will need 3-5K worth if stuff. The more inventory the better. Just a rough estimate is fine, don’t over think it. But realize if you didn’t meet you goal and you sold most of your inventory, you did not have the right ratio or you underpriced your stuff. Tip#2- Advertising- This is almost the most important because if no one comes it doesn’t matter how much great stuff you have! You need to drive people to the sale. Make sure to place on Craigslist (adds it to Yad Sale Treasure Map app), Local Facebook Marketplace Buy Sell Groups, and be sure to use signs to direct folks. Tip#2- Type of Inventory- Most yard sale failure is due to the person selling junk. My rule of thumb is if I can’t get more than a quarter for it, it is probably trash or needs to be donated. Try to sell desirable commodity items that anyone could use at 50% less than retail, but be willing to negotiate from there. Things like clothing, phone chargers, games, heath and beauty items, there are so many items that people not only want, but actually need. That is what you want to make sure you have. Also, collectables and antiques sell well, the only issue is there is less of a market for it over the commodity stuff. Tip #4- Pricing- Do not give your inventory away. If you are running this as a business, your inventory is the main thing that provides revenue. Just because the sale is in your yard does not mean you have to sell everything for cheap! Sure, cut some deal to make people happy and want to shop with you again, but don’t be a sucker and sell everything for a quarter. Its not worth your time. Tip #5- Setup- The location of the sale is very important. If too close to the road, many people will not get out of the car. But is too far, you may have the same result. Also, how you set your tables is important. Think of a retail store, they have some necessity stuff in the back but the things they want to sell you along that path. Also, you want to be able to view down the rows from your position and not have the tables perpendicular to your path, this will prevent some loss and allow you to make eye contact with potential customers. I hope these tips helped you out. If you have any more to add please place them down in the comments. Also, sorry for driving but I didn’t have 10 minutes to spare before it got dark that day.
